Monique Bryan-Johnson is one of two SUNY Nassau Community College students named to the 2021-2022 Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-New York Academic team.

"As a returning student, I came to SUNY Nassau because it was an affordable option to return to college. I am thankful to have met some amazing professors who are more than willing to go above and beyond to help students succeed in their studies. I also made some lasting connections at SUNY Nassau. I'm so glad I chose this College to grow as a student and as a person.

When I received an email from Phi Theta Kappa I did some research and decided to accept its invitation to be a part of their its honor society. While I was on the PTK scholarship portal, I completed their general application and was nominated. I am so honored to be recognized for my academic achievements, leadership accomplishments and engagement in community service.

I'm not absolutely certain what I want to do as a profession. I have been accepted to Columbia University and plan on pursuing my Bachelor's degree. I am interested in becoming a teacher to help and encourage women -- especially women of color -- to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) degrees. But I also have an interest in cybersecurity."

I served in the United States Navy in Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, II and at Camp Pendleton with the 5th Marines. I was also deployed to Okinawa, Japan twice. Stateside, I knew that Nassau Community College has a reputation for being very military friendly, and when I got here, it was true.
