Garden City, NY – On Wednesday, March 6, the Nassau Community College Spring 2013 Cultural Program will present “Fair Food: Growing a Healthy, Sustainable Food System for All” at 12:30 p.m. in the College Center Building. The program will be presented by Dr. Oran Hesterman, CEO of Fair Food Network.Dr. Hesterman wants to change not only what we eat, but how our food is grown, packaged, delivered and sold. His company, Fair Food Network, is a national non-profit dedicated to building a more just and sustainable food system. According to its website, it “works at the intersection of food systems, sustainability and social equity to provide access to healthy, fresh and sustainably grown food, especially in underserved communities.” It does this by improving food access (offering incentives for purchasing healthier food with federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits); informing public policy (convening critical stakeholders and conducting analysis); and strengthening funding strategies (helping foundations make better investments as an advisor on topics such as food systems, public policy and the role of philanthropy).Author of “Fair Food: Growing a Healthy, Sustainable Food System for All,” Dr. Hesterman’s experience in the philanthropic sector includes more than 15 years as program director for Food Systems at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Dr. Hesterman was also the president of Fair Food Foundation. Prior to his work in philanthropy, he researched and taught forage and cropping systems management at Michigan State University in East Lansing.
