For Immediate Release – November 5, 2019
Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College will present Reasonable Gun Safety on Tuesday, November 26 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 252/253 of the College Center Building. During the program, Linda Beigel Schulman, the mother of Scott Beigel — the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School teacher who saved many student lives but was murdered during the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida on February 14, 2018 — will speak about how she and her husband Michael have lobbied for tougher gun laws all over the United States.
Beigel Schulman has called on legislators to ban automatic weapons, require background checks for all gun ownership and pass proposed “red flag” laws, which she believes will help prevent people who are at risk of injuring themselves or others from having guns. A red flag law allows a police officer, family member or school administrator to ask a court to issue an extreme risk protection order that would prohibit a person deemed to be a danger from buying or possessing a firearm. Florida passed a red flag law as part of a gun control package in that state in the wake of the Parkland shooting.
Through the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund, Linda Beigel Schulman and Michael Schulman have also raised funds to send children affected by gun violence to summer camp.
