For Immediate Release – April 25, 2019
Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College is pleased to report that its blood drive program has won first place in the categories of largest total increase in units collected and largest percentage increase for the Long Island region in this academic year’s New York Mets College Blood Donor Championships. According to Dr. Arthur Friedman, NCC’s Blood Drive Task Force Coordinator, the College collected 968 units of blood during its blood drives for 2018 - 2019, 648 units more than 2017 - 2018, for a 209.55 percent increase.
NCC was automatically entered into the contest as an educational institution in the New York Blood Center’s regions.
“This a great recognition of Dr. Friedman’s organizing and leadership of the blood drives, and it’s a fine tribute to the response of the College to a humanitarian need,” said Dr. W. Hubert Keen, president of Nassau Community College.
“Nassau Community College has a long history of trying to meet some of our region’s need for blood. In addition, as an educational institution, we believe in our mission to develop individuals who recognize the need to contribute to the betterment of our community,” said Dr. Friedman, who has coordinated, or been a member of, NCC’s blood drive efforts for almost 42 years. While there are many College groups that work on the blood drives, Nassau is particularly proud of its Nursing students, who have selected this activity as their Service Learning project. In fact, David “Danny” Azerrad, an honors graduate of the Nursing program, continues to volunteer to help recruit donors and “manage” the other Nursing students in all aspects of the drive. Students, administrators, faculty and staff all contribute blood during the drives.
The next blood drive at NCC is on Thursday, May 16, 2019. For more information about Nassau Community College’s blood drive program, contact Dr. Friedman at 516.572.7401 x2.6028.
