Prof. Paul Schmidt, Head Coach of Men’s Wrestling at Nassau Community College Receives Prestigious Honor From National Wrestling Coaches Association |
Kerri-Ann McTiernan, Director of Athletics at Nassau, said, “Paul is extremely dedicated to his scholar athletes and has led NCC’s men’s wrestling team to numerous national titles. I’m proud that he was recognized by the NWCA as one of the top collegiate coaches in the country. He is an excellent educator as well as a outstanding coach and mentor. Nassau Community College is fortunate to have him."
According to Michael Moyer, Executive Director of the NCWA, each year the Leadership Academy asks a few “seasoned veteran coaches” to serve as a mentor to a group of aspiring coaches to show them how “sharpen their CEO skills and implement best practices for improving the alignment of their programs with educational values.”
The NCC men’s wrestling team has consistently produced national champions and All-Americans. After wrestling for the College as a student, Coach Schmidt has been a member of the coaching staff for more than 30 years. As head coach, he has led the team to eight national titles, been named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Coach of the Year seven times and been inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2015. Most recently, he was the driving force in bringing a women’s wrestling program to the College.
