Joe Echevarria was a latchkey kid growing up in a single parent home who worked as an auto mechanic during the summers in the South Bronx. He went to the University of Miami on a scholarship and graduated at the top of his class in 1978. Echevarria worked hard, both at his first job as an entry-level auditor at Haskins and Sells (which later merged with Deloitte) and learning the "social graces" that everyone else seemed to know automatically. He read a lot and was also fortunate enough to find a mentor. Echevarria advanced to audit partner ten years later. Over the years, he assumed multiple leadership positions until his CEO appointment in 2011. At that time, his responsibilities extended to 70,000 professionals in 90 U.S. cities and India. Echevarria played a crucial role in serving the investor public, protecting capital markets, and ensuring high quality service.
In addition, the recently retired Echevarria was the chair and CEO of President Obama's My Brother's Keeper Initiative, launched in 2014 to help make the American Dream available to boys and young men of color. He's also a frequent guest on CNBC and Fox Business and writes for the Wall Street Journal and Reuters.
