Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College is pleased to announce that Jorge L. Gardyn, MD, FACP, Chair of the Nassau Community College Board of Trustees, was named the Hispanic Healthcare Advocate of the Year by the Nassau County Legislature. Dr. Gardyn received the award on October 22 at the first Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration in Mineola, New York. "[Dr. Gardyn] was nominated for this award because of his special dedication to the community," said Norma Gonsalves, Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature. (download hi res photo)
Dr. Gardyn has been in private practice since 1990 and in 1995 started Island Occupational Medical Resources in Amityville, New York, which specializes in occupational medical examinations. He has been at the forefront of providing quality medical services for the volunteer firefighters of Nassau and Suffolk counties. Dr. Gardyn is the Medical Director for the Nassau County EMS Academy, the Nassau County Fire Service Academy and the Vocational Educational Extension Board License Practical Nursing Program. He also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center.
Dr. Gardyn has also been active over the years in the teaching of medical students, residents, nurse practitioner students and physician assistant students, and has clinical academic appointments to Stony Brook University School of Medicine, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and Touro College of Health Sciences.
"I am honored for this recognition, but accept it only in the name of all Hispanic physicians who practice the art of medicine for the good of their patients, and the communities that they serve," said Dr. Gardyn, a resident of Garden City.
