Religion and the Civil War: Focus on the Catholic Church

Who: The Center for Catholic Studies at Nassau Community College presents Brother Lawrence Syriac, S.M., Department of Social Studies, Chaminade High School, Mineola, New York.

What: Religion and the Civil War: Focus on the Catholic Church

When: Saturday, October 10, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Where: The Multipurpose Room of the College Center Building (CCB)

Why: Br. Syriac's lecture will be in three parts. The first is a summary of the main points contained within The Civil War as a Theological Crisis, authored by University of Notre Dame History Professor Mark A. Noll. The second portion of the lecture portrays the common soldier's understanding of the crisis and of the nature of God. The lecture's final section makes specific reference, as understood in the Catholic religious tradition, to God's presence on battlefields that included both priests and nuns.

All are invited to attend the free lecture, but registration and a one-day parking permit are required. Those interested in attending should contact the NCC Office of Workforce Development and Lifelong Learning at 1.516.572.7472 to register and receive a parking pass through the mail.
