TO: Members of the Board of Trustees
FROM: Nancy L. Zimpher, Chancellor
SUBJECT: Amendment to the Resolution Appointing the Acting President of Nassau Community College
Action Requested
The proposed resolution amends the appointment of the Acting President of Nassau Community College.
Resolution
I recommend that the Board of Trustees adopt the following resolution:
Whereas by resolution no. 2013-02, adopted by the State University of New York Board of Trustees on January 16, 2013, Dr. Kenneth K. Saunders was appointed Acting President of Nassau Community College; and
Whereas this appointment was to "continue until the Board of Trustees, by resolution, appoints a successor;" and
Whereas prior to his appointment as Acting President, Dr. Saunders served as Officer-in-Charge at Nassau Community College from July 30, 2012 to January 15, 2013; and
Whereas it is customary for the State University Board of Trustees to limit the appointment of an acting or interim president to twelve months or until a successor has been appointed, whichever comes first; and
Whereas due to extenuating circumstances that existed at Nassau Community College at the time that the Acting President was appointed, no limitation was placed on the duration of the appointment; and
Whereas the Nassau Community College Board of Trustees convened a presidential search committee and initiated a search for a permanent president for Nassau Community College on or about November 7, 2014; and
Whereas the presidential search at Nassau Community College is ongoing; now, therefore, be it Resolved that Resolution no. 2013-02 is hereby superseded to the extent that the appointment of the Acting President of Nassau Community College shall terminate sixty days from the date of this resolution, or until an interim or permanent president has been appointed, whichever comes first.
Background
Upon the departure of Dr. Donald Astrab in June 2012, Dr. Kenneth K. Saunders was appointed Officer-in-Charge by the Nassau Community College Board of Trustees effective July 30, 2012. On January 16, 2013, the SUNY Board of Trustees approved the appointment of Dr. Saunders as Acting President of Nassau Community College without limitation due to the special circumstances confronting the campus at that time. However; after three years, it is deemed necessary to place a time limit on the appointment.
