Dr. Edward Hoekstra is an independent Senior Health Advisor. Until recently, he was the Head of the Global Measles, Meningitis and Yellow Fever Mortality Reduction Program and coordinated health responses in emergencies for UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Emergency Fund). An expert in infectious diseases, Dr. Hoekstra's responsibilities included managing the annual $100 million UNICEF program to reduce mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases among the hardest to reach children in the least developed countries.
For over two years, Dr. Hoekstra worked on the health emergency response for the World Health Organization in Beijing. Before taking that post, he served for six years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, where he was part of President Clinton's initiative to increase vaccine coverage among two-year olds in the United States. He specifically focused on serving underserved inner city children.
Dr. Hoekstra earned his medical degree from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, specializing in public health, occupational health and public health care insurance. He also has a degree in epidemiology. He has worked as chief occupational physician for multinational corporations such as Mercedes-Benz and Avery (in the Netherlands). In 1990 Dr. Hoekstra set up the Occupational Health Centre Aruba for the Ministry of Health in that country and was also responsible for its Health Emergency Response.
