Garden City, NY – Prof. Amy King of Nassau Community College has been awarded the prestigious 2015 Women's National Book Association (WNBA) Award. The award is given every two years to honor a woman "who has done meritorious work in the world of books beyond the duties or responsibilities of her profession or occupation." The award will be presented to Prof. King in June at WNBA's annual meeting.
"The students at NCC who have had the benefit of learning from Professor King in their English classes already know the skills and the passion for the subject matter that she brings to their courses," said Dr. Kenneth Saunders, Acting President of Nassau Community College. He added, "It is indeed gratifying to now see this recognition go to her on a national level, as well."
Prof. King is the author of I Want to Make You Safe, I'm the Man Who Loves You, Slaves to Do These Things, Antidotes for an Alibi and The People Instruments. She also received the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. Prof. King's poetry has been nominated for several Pushcart Prizes and she was the recipient of a MacArthur Scholarship for Poetry. She is currently co-editing an anthology, Big Energy Poets of the Anthropocene.
"Much of why I do what I do is born from my experiences as an educator, which is why it is so meaningful to represent myself as a professor of NCC when I am acting as a writer and activist in the world," said Prof. King.
The Women's National Book Association is a national non-profit organization of women and men who work with and value books. It exists to promote reading and to support the role of women in this community. The WNBA has 800 members across the country and presents three distinguished national awards.
