Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College will present the drama The Old Settler January 23-25 and January 28-February 1 at the Little Theatre.Written by John Henry Redwood, The Old Settler is set in Harlem in 1943, at a time when the term "old settler" was used to describe an older, unmarried black woman with no romantic prospects. The story revolves around the relationship between Elizabeth Borny, a 55-year old spinster, and the handsome young boarder she has taken in to help pay the rent for the apartment she shares with her sister, Quilly. When Elizabeth takes up with the boarder, Quilly does nothing to hide her disapproval. Something, it seems, has been brewing between the sisters for a long time. The highly successful PBS film version of The Old Settler starred Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen.Performances of the play are at 8:00 p.m., except Sundays at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are priced at $9.00, discounted to $7.00 for those aged under 18 or over 55.
