Nassau Community College Presents

The Show-Off

December 11-14 & 17-20

Garden City, NY – The Nassau Community College Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to present the timeless comedy The Show-Off, which will be performed at the Mainstage Theatre December 11-14 and 17-20.

Living day-to-day in Philadelphia within the momentary historical lull of the twenties — the Great War done, and the Depression still to come — is the Fisher family, headed by Mr. Fisher and held together by Mrs. Fisher. Older daughter, Clara, is wed to Frank Hyland, and even if the two don't love each other a whole lot, at least he can comfortably provide for her and buy her pretty things.

Younger daughter, Amy, has her eyes set on the supremely irritating Aubrey Piper, and not only does she seem (against all odds) to love him, she doesn't even care whether he has enough money to support her. The increasingly deep waves of chagrin that pass across her mother's face from scene to scene are predictable and priceless.

The Show-Off tells the tale of how an annoying, near-con artist with delusions of competence somehow manages to help everything turn out all right for the very people he's been tormenting.

The success of The Show-Off put Philadelphia-born George Kelly in the running to receive the 1924 Pulitzer Prize for drama. The popular playwright did win the Pulitzer Prize in 1925 for Craig's Wife.
