September 17

Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College celebrates Constitution Day this year with the program A Tribute to Freedom Summer, 1964: The passionate commitment to have the Constitution keep faith with itself. The event will take place on Wednesday, September 17 at 9:30 a.m. in Room 252-253 of the College Center Building. This year marks the 50th anniversary of "Freedom Summer" when close to 1,000 volunteers, most of them college students, went to Mississippi to combat, through non-violent persistence, the pervasive denial to African Americans of the right to vote. NCC's observance of Constitution Day honors the commitment and the courage of the individuals who participated in the voter registration and educational efforts associated with Freedom Summer. In that spirit, the Public Broadcasting System's series The American Experience's presentation of the documentary Freedom Summer will be played in an encore performance at NCC.
