Women’s History Month at Nassau Community College

Social Justice: Women and Incarceration 

Garden City, NY – In observance of Women’s History Month, the Nassau Community College Women’s History Month Committee offers events raising awareness about the most pressing issues surrounding incarceration, especially as it effects girls and women. The New Sterilization: Incarceration as Population Policy, Tues., March 4, College Center Building (CCB) 252, 1:00 p.m. Historian Ricki Solinger discusses the “right” to have children, focusing on the impact of incarceration on motherhood in the U.S.The Women in Prisons Project, Thurs., March 6, CCB 252, 1:00 p.m. Tamar Kraft-Stolar, the director of the Women in Prisons Project of the Correctional Association of New York, and Mercedes Smith, an activist, will discuss some of the most pressing issues facing incarcerated women. Orange is the New Black, Mon., March 17, CCB Multipurpose Room, 11:00 a.m. Piper Kerman, author of the memoir Orange is the New Black, upon which the popular Netflix series is based, will discuss her experiences during and after her incarceration. Between Earth and Sky: Our Intimate Connection with Trees, Tues., March 18, CCB 252, 1:00 p.m. “Queen of Forest Canopy Research” Dr. Nalini Nadkarni will discuss her work on environmental issues, as well as her collaboration with scientists and prison inmates, to carry out research projects in conservation and restoration biology. The Shackling of Pregnant Women, Thurs., March 20, Bradley Hall Ballroom, 1:00 p.m. Activists Dan Moshenberg and Brigitte Marti will discuss their work to end the shackling of pregnant women in labor. Pursuing Global Justice Through Grassroots Change, Tues., March 25, CCB 252, 1:00 p.m. Ruth Messinger, President of American Jewish World Service, discusses her organization's work to alleviate poverty, hunger and disease among people across the globe.
