Rescuing Paintings, Abandoning Jews

Garden City, NY – Historian and Author Dr. Rafael Medoff will present Rescuing Paintings, Abandoning Jews on Monday, March 31 at 11:00 a.m. in Room 252/253 of the College Center Building at Nassau Community College.  His presentation will explore the controversy behind the film The Monuments Men, in which seven art historians and museum curators go behind enemy lines during World War II on a mission to recover some of the world's greatest works of art. (download hi res image)Dr. Rafael Medoff is founding director of The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies, which focuses on America’s response to the Holocaust through scholarly research, public events, publications and educational programs. He has written more than 15 books about the Holocaust, Zionism and American Jewish history. FDR and the Holocaust: A Breach of Faith is his most recent book. Dr. Medoff has also written many articles and presentations on these subjects. He taught Jewish history at Ohio State University and SUNY Purchase, among other institutions. He served on the editorial boards of American Jewish History, Southern Jewish History, Shofar and Menorah Review and for many years has been an Academic Council member of the American Jewish Historical Society.  In addition, Dr. Medoff has served as a consultant to a number of American, Italian and Israeli television and movie projects about the Holocaust, including Holocaust: The Untold Story, which was broadcast on the History Channel and nominated for an Emmy award.Rescuing Paintings, Abandoning Jews — which is sponsored by the NCC Cultural Program — is free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled.
