Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College is pleased to announce that Dr. Jorge Gardyn, Chair of its Board of Trustees, has been named the recipient of the prestigious 2014 Senator Norman J. Levy Humanitarian Award. Dr. Gardyn won the award for his many public service accomplishments."Dr. Gardyn's leadership on behalf of Long Islanders of so many walks of life has consistently been marked by caring, determination and grace, which is what makes this award so fitting and so well deserved," said Dr. Kenneth Saunders, Acting President of Nassau Community College.The Norman J. Levy Humanitarian Award was named after the late New York State Senator, who was committed to protecting the rights of people with disabilities and their families.“(Dr. Gardyn’s) dedication to improve the welfare of people through his many contributions to the community exemplifies the worthiness of this acknowledgement,” said Johanna Duncan-Poitier, Senior Vice Chancellor for Community Colleges and the Education Pipeline for the State University of New York. In addition to his service on the NCC Board, Dr. Gardyn is the Division Chief of Occupational and Corporate Medicine at Nassau University Medical Center. He has been in private practice since 1990 and in 1995 started Island Occupational Medical Resources, which specializes in occupational medical examinations. Dr. Gardyn has been at the forefront of providing quality medical services for the volunteer firefighters of Nassau and Suffolk Counties. In addition, he leads the medical team for the Nassau County Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged."It is a privilege to work with the members of the NCC community for the betterment of our students by facilitating their pathways to success.
