Nassau Community College Presents 

Surviving 460 Days of Brutal Captivity: Freedom and Forgiveness

Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College is pleased to present the cultural program Surviving 460 Days of Brutal Captivity: Freedom and Forgiveness, with speaker Amanda Lindhout, who was a hostage for 460 days in Somalia. The program will take place on Monday, November 25 at 9:30 a.m. in Room 252/253 of the College Center Building.Somalia, August 2008: 27-year old freelance journalist Amanda Lindhout is kidnapped by Islamic insurgents. Moved between a series of abandoned houses in the desert, she survives on memory — every lush detail of the world she experienced in her life before captivity. When she is most desperate, she visits a house in the sky, high above the woman kept in chains, in the dark, being tortured.Held captive for 15 months under deplorable conditions, Lindhout was finally ransomed and freed. In her book about this experience, A House in the Sky, she explains how her journey through regret, anger and pain ultimately led her to discover that as long as she retained her ability to feel compassion, her humanity could never be taken from her. Today, Lindhout is the Executive Director of Global Enrichment Foundation, engaging in charitable and relief work in Somalia and other countries.Surviving 460 Days of Brutal Captivity: Freedom and Forgiveness is sponsored by NCC's Cultural Program.
