Dr. Kathy Weiss Named to Nassau Community College Board of Trustees

Garden City, NY — Kathy Weiss, Ph.D. has been appointed to the Nassau Community College (NCC) Board of Trustees by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo.  "I am indeed looking forward to working with Dr. Weiss on the Board.  With her experience as a professor and in educational administration, as well as with her depth of knowledge on issues of importance to the College community, she brings to the Board perspective and wisdom that we will surely value," said Dr. Jorge Gardyn, Vice Chair of the Nassau Community College Board of Trustees.A longtime educator, Dr. Weiss has devoted most of her career to the administrative aspects of education.  She is currently an adjunct professor at LIU Post's education school and a special compliance officer for sexual harassment, ethnic harassment and workplace discrimination for school districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties.  Previously, Dr. Weiss served as the Superintendent of Schools for the Baldwin school district for twelve years.  In addition, she served as an assistant superintendent, high school principal, and elementary and high school teacher.  Dr. Weiss has spoken on the local, state and national level about such topics as shared decision-making, using data to improve instruction, and school/community communications.Dr. Weiss is enthused about joining the NCC Board.  "I am looking forward," she said, "to working with my colleagues on the Board of Trustees to help the College fulfill its mission to provide our students with a high quality, affordable education that will enable them to succeed at a four-year college and/or to enter the workforce."The recipient of numerous professional honors, Dr. Weiss served as President of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents, President of the Nassau County District Curriculum Officials and as President of the Nassau County District Curriculum Officials, as well as on the Superintendents' Board of the Section VIII Athletics.Active in her community, Dr. Weiss is presently the treasurer for the Board of Directors of The Maurer Foundation for Breast Health Education and has served on the board for the past sixteen years.  She also was a member of the Long Island Blood Services Leadership Team.After receiving her BA in Mathematics from Syracuse University, Dr. Weiss obtained an MA in Mathematics from the Courant Institute of New York University and a Ph.D. from New York University.A resident of Oyster Bay, Dr. Weiss enjoys playing golf, traveling, gourmet cooking and reading.  Dr. Weiss has been married to her husband Michael for 42 years.Dr. Weiss's term on the Nassau Community College Board of Trustees extends through 2017.
