Thomas Jackson II Elected NCC Student Government Association President

Thomas Jackson’s optimism and enthusiasm are infectious. The 23-year old is brimming with ideas on how best to spend his time as the 2013-2014 president of the Student Government Association (SGA).   “My feeling is that college is what you make of it. There are so many ways to get involved at NCC and such a community feeling here that it just really encourages you to join in,” he said. This year, Jackson was a freshman leader, as well as a member of the Biology club and the Make a Difference club. “I think these experiences help students like me gain the skills and confidence we’re going to need after we graduate,” he said. Jackson hopes to maintain and enhance that community feeling while he is SGA president. He looks forward to working with the other members of student government and all Nassau students. At a recent student leadership conference that he attended in Orlando, Jackson said that strong emphasis was placed on the notion that student government leaders should work with other students on an on-going basis even after various campus activities have received the approval of the student government association. Jackson believes that this, too, will motivate students to take part in College functions.Using his talent for outspokenness, Jackson intends to be an advocate for all students, especially at such events as Board of Trustees and Academic Senate meetings. “If you have an idea or a problem, you must have an active voice to get things done,” he remarked.Jackson, who lives in Wyandanch and graduated from Freeport High School, went for a time to Stony Brook University. However medical issues necessitated that he leave school. Once those issues were resolved, he worked full-time before returning to college, initially choosing Nassau for its affordability and location. Jackson was happy to find that NCC’s faculty are excellent and supportive. “All of my teachers have been outstanding,” he said.
