“Ending Gun Violence” — New York State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel

Garden City, NY – The Nassau Community College Spring 2013 Cultural Program is proud to present “Ending Gun Violence,” which will take place on Thursday, April 18 at 10:00 a.m. on the 11^th floor of the Tower Building. The program will be presented by New York State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, Co-Chair of the New York State Chapter of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns.  Download hi res photoMichelle Schimel is now serving her fourth term in the New York State Assembly for the 16^th Assembly District. She is recognized in her community for her passion on the issues that affect New York, particularly the prevention of gun violence. For close to 20 years, Schimel served on the Board of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV), the largest group in the state dedicated to reducing gun-related violence. In 1995, as Vice President and member of the Executive Board of NYAGV, Schimel and Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy co-founded the Long Island chapter.To date, Schimel’s proudest accomplishment is her microstamping legislation, which would make all semi-automatic handguns to be microstamp capable. Microstamping technology allows police officers to trace firearms through cartridge casings found at crime scenes, even if the gun is never recovered.Schimel, who was born in Brooklyn, has been a resident of Great Neck since 1982. Before being elected to public office, she was a physical therapist at North Shore University Hospital. She also served as vice president of a fashion accessories firm.
