Nassau Community College Presents “Women’s Rights in Islam: Champion of Feminism or Misogynistic Faith?”

Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College will present “Women’s Rights in Islam: Champion of Feminism or Misogynistic Faith?” on Tuesday, February 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the A. Holly Patterson Library. The program will feature Nazli Chaudhry of the Islamic Center of Long Island.During “Women’s Rights in Islam: Champion of Feminism or Misogynistic Faith?” Chaudhry will explore women’s rights and cultural practices as they pertain to Islam. Chaudhry, a Muslim woman, has contributed locally and nationally — in meetings, conferences and task forces — to causes that promote peace, understanding and tolerance among different faiths, age groups and genders. A graduate of the University of Calgary, Chaudhry is currently the Director of Interfaith Programs at the Suffolk Y Jewish Center. She also serves on the Stony Brook University Multicultural Advisory Committee.“Women’s Rights in Islam: Champion of Feminism or Misogynistic Faith?” will feature some of the resources from the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys, a collection of materials from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. Major support for the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf was provided by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Additional support for the arts and media components was provided by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. Local support for the event is provided by the A.
