Nassau Community College Presents

"The City Dark" Filmmaker Ian Cheney

April 30 Ian Cheney

Garden City, NY — The Nassau Community College Spring 2012 Cultural Program is proud to host a presentation by Ian Cheney, writer, producer and director of "The City Dark," a documentary film about light pollution. The Monday, April 30 event will include a screening of the film at 12:30 p.m., followed by a presentation by Cheney at 2:00 p.m. Both events will take place in the College Center Building.

Cheney's provocative film shows how light pollution is affecting people and wildlife. It asserts that since our most inhabited places have essentially no night, our human rhythms that are tied to the natural cycle of light and dark have been disrupted. An example of wildlife disruption is shown when newly hatched sea turtles in Florida are confused about where the ocean is because of lights around the nesting grounds. "The City Dark" also explores what our increasing inability to see the night sky means for us philosophically.

For more information about Cheney's presentation — which is free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled — call 516.572.7153.
