Nassau Community College Presents: Black History Month 2012 January 26 - February 28

Garden City, NY - During February, the Nassau Community College Black History Month Committee will present a month of programs and events in tribute to African American achievements in America. All programs, except for the play "Blues for an Alabama Sky," will take place in the College Center Building and are free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled.

Jan. 26-29 & Feb. 1-5 "Blues for an Alabama Sky"In Pearl Cleage's play, creative artists, writers and luminaries bask in the glory and the hope of the Harlem Renaissance "for a red hot minute." Then comes the Great Depression and harsher realities set in. Performances are at 8:00 p.m. daily, except Sundays, when they are at 3:00 p.m. To order tickets, call the Theatre box office at 516.572.7676. This play is a joint production of the NCC Theatre and Dance Department and the Africana Studies Department.

Feb. 2, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. - 23rd Annual African American Read-InCome and participate by sharing and reading your own work or that of your favorite African American authors or poets.11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. - Michelle Duster - Writer, personal historian and great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells--a prominent journalist, civil rights activist and suffragist--discusses the positive contributions of African Americans and women.

Feb. 7, 11:30 a.m. - Touré As a correspondent for NBC, host of Fuse TV's "The Hip Hop Show" and "On the Record," and a contributing editor to "Rolling Stone," Touré is one of today's most important cultural commentators. The author of "Who's Afraid of Post-Blackness," he addresses such issues as hip-hop culture, modern racism and interracial dating.

Feb. 13, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. - A Night of GospelEnjoy an evening of soulful gospel featuring "The Shepherd's Singers," multi-denominational Christian music ministry performed by talented musicians from a variety of host churches.

Feb. 14, 11:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. - Elon James White, ComedianElon James White is a Brooklyn-based comedian, writer and host of the popular web series "This Week in Blackness," a satirical look at race, politics and pop culture in so called "post-racial" America. White has been a commentator on VH1's "Black to the Future" and "The Great Debate."

Feb. 28, 11:30 a.m. - "Sistas on Fire"Three African American female writers, Marcia McNair, SistaGurl and Anissa Moore, use vignettes about topics relevant to African American women to take the audience from merely being mad about pressing social and political issues to being proactive forces for social change.
