April 23, Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College was excited to host this year’s Wushu Championships, the first-ever held in Nassau County. Two-hundred sixty-eight athletes from 15 U.S. states and Canada competed in more than 800 events at the championships, according to Meng Li, Nassau County Deputy Director of Asian American Affairs.
“Families across Nassau were especially excited and grateful to have such a meaningful event hosted locally,” said Deputy Director Li. “In the past, many had to travel as far as Texas or California to participate in similar competitions. We are grateful to Nassau Community College for hosting and look forward to coming back again in the future.”
The Wushu Championships are sports competitions for the disciplines of wushu taolu (routines) and sanda (full-contact fighting) events. Kung fu is a broader term referring to any acquired skill through effort and practice, often used in the context of Chinese martial arts, while wushu specifically refers to the modern, performance-based forms of Chinese martial arts, particularly those used in competitive sports. The Tai Chi Qigong Association of America hosted its first 2025 International Wushu Championships at NCC. This event was a Kungfu Team Trial for athletes to be eligible to compete in the upcoming 10th World Kungfu Championships in October and the 5th Pan American Kungfu Championships.
NCC was honored to host the Wushu Championships.
