March 25, Garden City, NY – In a collaborative effort between the Martin Barooshian Artwork Trust and the NCC Art Collection, the Plaza Art Gallery at Nassau Community College is proud to present the solo exhibition Martin Barooshian, American Surrealist.
Martin Barooshian (1929-2022) was an American painter and printmaker, active in the second half of the 20th and early part of the 21st century. Barooshian served the art community as an innovator, leader, teacher, and historian. His mature work does not easily fit into any convenient category, however, he most often classified himself as a Surrealist, specifically a Biomorphic Abstract Surrealist.
The Plaza Art Gallery serves the college and community as an exhibition space and is entrusted with the care and preservation of the arts through the Nassau Community College Art Collection. The gallery makes a unique contribution to the public by collecting, preserving, and interpreting art. Its mission also includes exhibiting and educating with work not only owned but also borrowed for these ends. The NCC Art Collection includes over 400 works of art. Throughout the late 1980s Martin Barooshian generously donated a portion of his work to the NCC College Art Collection.
Now, for the first time on view in over 30 years, The Plaza Art Gallery welcomes visitors to the biomorphic world of Martin Barooshian/American Surrealist. The exhibit is ongoing through May 7th.
The Plaza Art Gallery at Nassau Community College is open Monday through Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The gallery is located on the plaza level of the Tower Building. For more information about this exhibit call 516.572.9699 or visit ncc.edu/artgallery.
