March 10, Garden City, NY – NCC was the setting for several scenes of the hit Apple TV+ series Severance, for an episode that aired on February 28. The scenes for “Chikhai Bardo” were shot over the course of a weekend in early summer, when no classes were in session.
Severance is a somber sci-fi thriller that explores a corporate conspiracy at Lumon Industries, a biotech company where select employees undergo a surgical procedure that splits their consciousness in two. Their work and personal lives exist as separate entities, with no shared memories — only the knowledge that they have an “innie” (their work self) and an “outie” (their personal self). In the final episode of season one, in 2022, three of the four core innie employees — Mark Scout, Helly Riggs, and Irving Bailiff — contrived to be very briefly conscious in the outie world. There innie Mark learned that fellow severed employee Ms. Casey was actually his wife, Gemma, whom he believed was dead.
Scenes for “Chikai Bardo” (the title is one of six states of being in Tibetan Buddhism) were shot in the open-air tunnel to the plaza in front of the NCC Administration Building and the A. Holly Patterson Library. The episode opens with Gemma walking through the tunnel into the administration plaza, passing groups of students. Another scene flashed back to Mark and Gemma meeting as professors at an unnamed college, falling in love, marrying, and being unable to conceive a child.
At least 30 people from the college were paid to appear in the TV series’ scenes shot at NCC. Severance also filmed on campus in summer of 2023 for its first season.
